Study Name: First Person Plural: Transcribing the Perspectives of Canadian Broadcast Pioneers for a Digital Age

Purpose of the Research: By investigating pioneering broadcasters at the centre of the last century of communication technologies’ transformation, and focusing on core elements of the catalysts of conversion from one medium to the next, the research will examine the role that these innovators had on the Canadian broadcasting scene and the technology as a whole. Through the recorded interviews, the research will encompass a wide range of innovative and historically significant perspectives on this process of technological change in Canada and the ever-evolving role the medium has held within Canadian social and cultural history.

What You Will Be Asked to Do in the Research: The participants will be interviewed for approximately 20 to 30 minutes (sometimes longer or shorter depending on the participant).

Risks and Discomforts: We do not foresee any risks or discomfort from your participation in the research.

Benefits of the Research and Benefits to You: Participants, either anonymous or not, will have their unique perspectives published.

Voluntary Participation: Your participation in the study is completely voluntary and you may choose to stop participating at any time. Your decision not to volunteer will not influence the nature of your relationship with York University either now, or in the future.

Withdrawal from the Study:  You can stop participating in the study at any time, for any reason, if you so decide. If you decide to stop participating or to refuse to answer particular questions, your decision will not affect your relationship with the researchers, York University or any other group associated with this project. Further, in the event you withdraw from the study, all associated data collected as a result of your participation will be immediately destroyed wherever possible.

Confidentiality: Interviewing or recording of the participant will be associated with identifying information with your consent. All information you supply during the research will be held in confidence and unless you specifically indicate your consent, your name will not appear in any report or publication of the research. Data will be collected using video/audio tapes, using digital devices and supplemented with handwritten notes. Your data will be safely stored on a secure external hard drive in a locked facility and only research staff will have access to this information. Participants will be given credit for their contributions. The interview data will be digitally recorded. The data will be safely stored in multiple password protected databases indefinitely for possible future research and only research staff will have access to this information. Confidentiality will be provided to the fullest extent possible by law. If you choose to waive your anonymity, you may be quoted and your name may appear in any report or publication of the research.
